KD Conservatory’s Rex McGee Talks Emmy Predictions

As an established and respected screenwriter, KD Conservatory instructor Rex McGee knows a thing or two about good, entertaining storytelling. That’s why he was the perfect guest to join WFAA-TV Dallas/Ft. Worth’s Jonathan Betz on the morning of the 64th Primetime Emmy Awards to discuss his top predictions for category winners. During the discussion, McGee disclosed who his top picks were for three main categories – best comedy series, best drama series, and best miniseries – and shared his impressions on some of the leading nominees.

So, how did he do? Were his predictions right? Let’s find out:

Outstanding Comedy Series

The Nominees: The Big Bang Theory * Curb Your Enthusiasm * Girls * Modern Family * 30 Rock * Veep

The Prediction: “I have my own personal favorite, which is Curb Your Enthusiasm, because there is no one in television like Larry David. He is a unique genius, the real George Costanza,” explained McGee. “I think Modern Family is going to take it again for the fourth time because it’s just so funny! It’s just really one of the funniest shows on the air.”

The Winner: Modern Family

Outstanding Drama Series

The Nominees: Boardwalk Empire * Breaking Bad * Downton Abbey * Game of Thrones * Homeland * Mad Men

The Prediction: “I think it’s hard to go wrong with any of those, because they’re all really brilliant shows. The Las Vegas money is on Mad Men,” said McGee before ribbing the interviewer for looking as if he could have just walked off the Mad Men set. “But you know, I’m thinking Boardwalk Empire may just steal it this year because it’s such a quality show. It’s got the genius of Martin Scorsese behind it, and Steve Buscemi is just brilliant. You know, any of them could win and I’d say, ‘Great’.”

The Winner: Homeland

Outstanding Miniseries or Movie

The Nominees: American Horror Story * Game Change * Hatfields & McCoys * Hemingway & Gellhorn * Luther * Sherlock: A Scandal in Belgravia

The Prediction: “I think the one to beat is Game Change. I really loved that show, and the performances were terrific,” McGee predicted. “It’s got Jay Roach behind it, the great filmmaker, the great comedy filmmaker who’s on a serious note for a change. And I like them all, but I’ve got to pick one.”

The Winner: Game Change

In the end, McGee nailed two out of three of his predictions – not bad! To hear more about what McGee had to say about some of this year’s biggest shows and Emmy nominees, you can watch the entire interview here.
