Your child is charismatic, photogenic, and a natural performer – naturally, you think they should take it to the next level and pursue a career in acting. Who knows, you may be raising the next Demi Lovato – one of the most successful KD Conservatory alumni. But before your son or daughter steps out into the spotlight, there are some important things you should consider.
Is your child passionate about acting?
Before embarking on a mission to break your child into the entertainment industry, it’s important to determine that your child is the one passionate about the field, not just you. Even if your child has done some local theater with great enthusiasm, this also doesn’t necessarily mean that he or she will continue to be interested in pursuing acting in the future. Remember that your child is less likely to perform well if he or she isn’t totally committed to acting – which means a lower likelihood of getting acting jobs. Only your son or daughter can really decide if they have the drive to succeed as an actor, so listen closely to their needs. If they start saying they’re not having fun anymore, don’t push them.
Am I committed to my child’s success?
You will play a major role in your child’s success. For example, you or other family members must be willing to drive your child back and forth to auditions. This may mean significant time taken out of your own personal schedule. Without the commitment of the entire family, a child’s acting career won’t get very far.
Learn about show business
Since your child is still too young to navigate the entertainment industry by him or herself, it’s up to you to learn all the ins and outs of how the business works so you and your child can have every available advantage. Luckily, this isn’t too difficult when you’ve got the KD Conservatory expert faculty right at your fingertips. This will also help you avoid falling victim to the all-too-common “Hollywood talent agent” scams that have cost many parents hundreds or thousands of dollars – you’ll know what to look for and how to protect yourself.

Get your child as much acting experience as possible
Even experience that doesn’t offer payment can prove valuable later down the road. Roles in local theater productions can teach your child what acting is really like behind the scenes, and also help them hone their skills. Formal training is also a great idea.
